Marine Black Noire Phyllite

Beautiful, Soapstone-Like Marine Black Phyllite

While it is widely sold as soapstone, Marine Black is phyllite, a fine-grained natural metamorphic rock. Quarried in Northern India, Marine Black is deep and decadent with light white veining.

While not as dense or naturally non-porous as true soapstone, Marine Black phyllite offers a visually similar aesthetic with decent performance in kitchen and bath settings. It can handle heat and resists staining and bacterial growth when properly sealed—a maintenance step required periodically to preserve its surface. Though it lacks some of the inherent advantages of soapstone, it can be a suitable option for certain indoor and outdoor applications, including countertops, wall cladding, and exterior tile, especially when paired with soapstone elements for a cohesive look

If you are looking for a natural stone with the appeal of soapstone but are working with a tight budget, Marine Black Noire phyllite may fit the bill. If you’d like to learn more about imitation soapstone, explore our Buyer Beware blog for more information on how to spot counterfeit stones.
