An Ideal Medium for All Stone Carving Experience Levels
A soapstone (Steatite) block is an exceptional carving medium because it’s soft, dense, and easy to work with. Barroca contains less talc than other carving-grade Brazilian soapstone and is very similar in texture and density to the Virgina-quarried Alberene. Because of this soapstone’s consistency, it is ideal for carving sculptures and creating artwork that involves complicated shapes. Soapstone is a suitable option for beginners just learning to carve but is also favored by experienced sculptors for its superior texture and ability to hold fine detail. Soapstone is suitable for outdoor sculptures because it is non-porous and weather- and mold-resistant.
Barroca Soapstone is a gray, lightly veined stone from the Mariana region of Brazil. After applying oil or wax treatment, it becomes dark black with pronounced white or cream veining. Soapstone sculptures can achieve a shine if treated and polished properly after carving. This stunning carving soapstone variety was used by Brazil’s most famous baroque sculptor, Alejadinho.
